Executive Summary
Health Facilities Planning and Development
Seattle, WA
July 2007
Please note: This survey, along with Focus groups and three Community Forums (see below for times and places) are all a part of Mason General Hospital’s information gathering to help in the Strategic Plan to meet the needs of local healthcare.
In July, 2007, Health Facilities Planning and Development (HFPD) of Seattle conducted a consumer opinion telephone survey on behalf of Mason General Hospital (Mason County PHD No. 1). This report emphasizes results form 512 randomly selected households in the portion of Mason County that represents the new boundaries of Mason Public Hospital District No. 1. An additional 107 households were surveyed in North County (Belfair and Tahuya); these households were known to have previously visited the North Mason Medical Clinic. This survey has a maximum error rate at the 95% level of confidence of approximately ± 5.0%.
This Executive Summary provides overall conclusions derived from the survey, and draws comparisons based on HFPD’s experience conducting similar surveys for hospitals throughout the Pacific Northwest. The main body of this document provides specific results, findings, and significant detail regarding the survey. A separate Appendix provides the complete raw data.
Some of the questions in this survey replicate questions asked in an HFPD survey of the County conducted on behalf of the Hospital in June, 2002, allowing for some comparisons of results between the two surveys.
Overall Survey Findings and Conclusions – Issues and Opportunities and Potential Next Steps for Mason General Hospital.
- Patient satisfaction with outpatient surgery at MGH is very strong (94% gave this the highest rating), and satisfaction with mammography services is higher relative to other providers (76% versus 65%).
- Inpatients are much more likely to give their experience with MGH the highest satisfaction rating than are patients who stayed at another hospital. The 86% of all patients who gave MGH the highest rating is up significantly from 54% in 2002.
- Urgent/ emergency care satisfaction ratings for MGH (61% gave the highest rating) compare very favorably to ratings for other providers (53%).
- Among all the specific aspects of care at MGH tested in the survey, the Hospital rates highest for its Food Services. In literally every other survey where this item has been tested for other hospitals, it has been HFPD’s experience that this service rates at or near the bottom.
- Other aspects of care at MGH that rated highly were nursing care, the cleanliness, comfort and attractiveness of the facilities, and ease of facility use.
- Fully 89% of all respondents had heard of or seen MGH’s SCOPE newsletter. Two thirds of these respondents said they look at all 4 issues of SCOPE annually, and one-third gave SCOPE the highest possible satisfaction rating. 22% of all respondents had heard of or seen MGH’s website.
